Longer and tougher schedule. Adopt a new style, a hybrid of Soviet School and Canadian school most of all team chemistry. “Bob, 4 years ago our Olympic team lost the Czech B team 15 – 0. “It wasn’t because you weren’t good enough. All-star teams fail because they rely solely on the individual talent. They use a system that is designed for the betterment of the team. It is a pretty lofty goal – “That’s why I want to pursue it.”

Prepping equipment: (What is your process?) Old School helmets, goalie masks.
The Tryout Process & Evaluators: “Eruzione – The kid doesn’t have a shot of making this team.”

Evaluations: How do you determine who the top players are?
Not a shot in hell. different perspectives – see players differently.

Assistant Coaches role: Stick close to the kids.
26 names: This is the final roster – you kiddin’ me, right? What about the advisory staff. “Technically” “I am not looking for the best players, I am looking for the right players.” “Ever see him when his game is on?” (Not starting HIS college goalie) Making of a Miracle account
If you play long enough and at a high level you probably WILL get cut.Announcing the team: Emotional roller coaster. What is it like when you hear the news?
Meeting a Coach for the 1st Time / I won’t be your friend: “I’ll be your coach. I won’t be your friend. If you need one of those take it up with Doc or Coach Patrick.” Psychological Test What is the best way to inform a team? (Sports Psychologist)
Administration begins with A: “I think we have a problem.” That is just not going to happen. I already know my team. Each one of those kids were picked for a reason. I have studied film. I have spoken with their coaches. The team I have chosen is it. Tell them the truth.” “They hired me to do a job and I am trying to do it.” I hope you know what you are doing.
The Test: Stopped by a policeman, but you know you are not all fault. There are 300 of these.
4. Old Rivalries (17:50 – 23:47): I don’t know how you can sit in the same room as him. “OC has a little unfinished business. McClanahan, You are not still going on about the 76 Playoffs. That was like 3 years ago. Why did you want to play college hockey? (Ask yourself the same question.) I love to play hockey. I want to go the NHL. Well, I wanted to win a national championship. That over there pansy cheap shots me. I get tossed out of the game. He stole the ring of my finger. I was just wondering whose side you are on…. Mental Health & Commitment: How is your family doing? And you? I have to know how committed are you to being here? Because if you are not, you are just wasting our time here. “My dad is going through a rough time right now. He’s got nothing. He lost his job and with Atlanta trying to sign me. Bottom line is my mom wanted this. Me playing on this team. Hard to say no to someone who drove you to practice every day, right. I’m here aren’t I?”
Don’t forget to bring your game (Throws the test in the trash.)
Coaches use different motivational tools for different teams and players. Describe some of the different ways coaches have attempted to motivate you and your team?
A Coach’s Philosophy Not Always Easy to Figure Out: “This I have never seen. has a reason for everything he does.” He’ll end up with 20 players hating his guts. They won’t hate each other.
Breaking down film of practice. (Not huddl / Amaral throwing team out, scouting reports.)
Family Sacrifices and Support: “You’ll figure it out!” Can you turn that off please. Please. Every once in a while your meeting are going to have to wait. “I am coaching a hockey team here. We already talked about this?” “When exactly did we have the talk. We never had this talk! What did I say. We never had this talk… NEVER!”
Chasing a goal / dream: “It is not because we never talked. You never even asked. I know what this is about it. I know it and you know it. … Chasing something you may never get. What if it doesn’t workout? Are we going to do this every 4 years? Go finish your work.”

Marriage Involves Sacrifice and Support: “This is the only way I know how to do it. It is not the easiest for you or the kids. Patty I have to do this…. I am sorry we didn’t talk. And I was wrong not to ask. So I am asking now if you can you be with me on this, because it won’t mean anything if you are not.” (Tears of wife A coach’s wife makes sooooooooooo many sacrifices.)

Back on the line! Again. Again. Again. Are you going to quit on me? OC, I got my money on you Of course, you got a hot date an hour from now but you’re not looking too good. Send ’em. Again.
Conflicts between Coaches: “Doc, I mean this is madness right.”
You have to be uncommon: “This cannot be a team of common men, because common men go nowhere. You have to be uncommon.”
This has gone on long enough. Somebody is going to get hurt.

Reality & The Vision: I can give you a load of crap about how you are a better team than them, but it would be a load of crap… Everyone in this room knows what they are saying about our chances. I also know there is a way to stay with this team. You don’t defend them, you attack them. You take their game and shove it right back in their face. The team that is finally willing to do this has a chance to put them down. The rest of the world is afraid of them. Boys we won’t be. No one has ever worked hard enough to skate with the Soviet Team for entire game. Gentlemen, we are gonna work hard enough.

I am writing to you to give you a little feedback on the One Letter Make A Difference project.
To be honest, when I received M’s letter, I was pleasingly surprised. For me personally, I felt a few different emotions, somewhat overwhelmed, content and proud while reading her letter to me. As a parent, it has always been about doing what’s best for your child, creating memories together and of course, being a family. From the letter M wrote, I felt reassured that I had been the parent I had hoped I would be.
I think this letter writing project should be continued for years to come in the high school. Something to be thankful for project letter writing as well. I truly enjoyed receiving the letter and forwarded the letter to a friend who will hopefully, continue the One Letter Make A Difference project writing.
However you choose to celebrate the Holiday Season, I hope it is spent surrounded by the ones that mean the most.
Regards,
A mom
December 5th email to teacher
I received my son’s (WC) letter of appreciation last night.
I was touched to receive this letter as it was written from the heart. While I know how many memories we have made together, I had no idea from his perspective, exactly how grateful he has been to have me in his life. This letter made me feel very special. While he has several positive people in his life, being chosen by as his recipient is an honor.
Most of us are just working hard to get through each day and enjoying family, friends and our down time. While we appreciate those in our lives, taking some time to let them know can be rewarding for both.
This was a great project for the senior class, and hopefully, a life lesson.
