US History: Remember the Titans

Connections to Today: As we study the time period of the 1800s where slavery and race differences are the dominant issues in politics, we are going to jump forward to the 1960s to see the impact of race on America. Over 100 years AFTER THE CIVIL WAR, even though slavery is gone, race and differences with races are still dividing our country. We will use this film in a later writing assignment to compare and contrast the impact of race on American culture.

Pre-Viewing Writing Prompt: In the space below, answer the following question. It is very open-ended. The only requirement is that you write for 6:00. Describe race in America today. Do people segregate (only associate with members of their own race. Do you feel racism exists? Support your position with examples. Have you experienced racism or do you know someone who has experienced racism? Do you have any ideas for how to improve race relations? If you know about the Met-Co program, share your knowledge.

On the back, fold the paper into 2 columns. Label one white and the other African-American. Take notes on the experiences of each group. Do not go crazy with notes, but also do not leave it blank! Bullets are fine. Include players, coaches, families, and even the younger children. This will be collected and worth 10 points.
