The East Bridgewater Community Channel 98 Game February 28, 2018 vs. Madison Park

This game has created a national discussion on sportsmanship. One high school team defeated another in a state tournament game by 86 points. The superintendent of the WINNING team issued an apology. We will watch sections of the game to get your reaction.

Can show segments:

1st Quarter (24-0): 1st 3 minutes, last 2 minutes. Good to show the start of the game, but really in a high school tournament game, all bets should be off. Just play the game with the best players. It is a “win or go home” game. (Not necessary just clips)

2nd quarter (48-4): This is good to show especially the last few minutes of the half.

3rd quarter:

4th quarter (57:00): This is probably the best indicator if an apology is necessary. The game is clearly decided, the starters have had plenty of playing time, the bench players clearly should be in at this point.

One Coach’s Reaction

A coach or parent (I’m not sure which) sent me a link yesterday asking for my opinion on a blowout HS game…

Here’s the story:

A division 3 high school team won a playoff game 93 – 7 AND THEN the superintendent of the winning school apologized to the opposition for the large margin of victory…

She said “This (the score line) is not a reflection of our student body or our athletic program” and then called it “an unfortunate situation”.

So the question I was asked is:

“Should the winning team have apologized for winning by such a large margin?”

My answer:

It depends… (good answer and TRUE)

If the winning coach was intentionally running up the score by playing their best players the entire game and continuing to run a full-court press for all four quarters, then that’s poor coaching.

(I didn’t see the game. I have no idea if that’s what they did.)

If the winning coach gave the bench players extended minutes and dropped back into a man-to-man defense, then that’s good coaching.

And that’s exactly what the coach of a team winning by such a large margin should do.

If they did do this and the margin continued to extend — that’s basketball.

What’s the alternative?

Ask players to intentionally miss shots so that the margin on the score board isn’t too big?

Come on…

To make sure you’re not on the losing side of a 93 – 7 score line, let me give you all the secrets to developing a killer team. (selling content)
