Starland Email
Dear Starland Friends & Family,
Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our guests. As concerns continue to grow about Coronavirus (COVID-19), Starland Sportsplex & Fun Park is taking every precaution necessary to create an environment for our guests that is as safe as possible.
What Starland is doing
  • Closely monitoring the situation and taking action. We’re following updates on COVID-19, including guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and local health officials. We’ll continue to take actions necessary to help protect the Starland community and be ready to act, as needed. At this time, there are no changes to any programs or activities.
  • Helping with prevention. Guest safety is our number one priority. We’ve increased the number of hand sanitizers throughout the facility as well as the frequency of cleaning & disinfecting of high-contact areas. Additionally, all employees have been trained in vigilant personal washing, cleaning, and will wear gloves when serving our guests.
  • Feeling sick? Stay home. Closely monitoring the health of our staff and enforcing any and all to stay home and not come to work even with the slightest of symptoms.
At the same time, we request that all of our patrons follow the same vigilance. Practice good hygiene by washing your hands frequently (20 seconds), cover your nose & mouth if you have to sneeze or cough, and stay home if you are feeling sick.
Right now no changes have been made to any programs or activities; stay informed with future updates by visiting starlandsports.com/updates.
Small actions can make a big difference when everyone helps out — thanks for doing your part.
Kahoot

Dear community,

The outbreak of COVID-19 (coronavirus) has caused many educational institutions to close temporarily and rely on distance learning.

Kahoot! is used by millions of teachers and educators around the world, and in these challenging times, we want to ensure they can continue to teach. While our free version enables distance learning, we want to make sure educators have all the tools they need to fully engage students outside of the classroom.

That’s why we’ve put together a guide to distance learning and why we’re providing schools affected by the coronavirus with free access to Kahoot! Premium for the remaining months of the academic year.

With Kahoot! Premium, educators can use advanced question types, collaborate with colleagues, and access in-depth reports, which can be used for formative assessment. To request access to Kahoot! Premium, reply to this email with the number of educators at your school, and we’ll get you set up.

We sincerely hope that things will soon get back to normal. In the meantime, it’s our hope that we can help educators continue to make learning awesome – even in these difficult times.

All the best,

MIAA Walker System

Walker System Overview

The Walker System will use a three prong system that will weigh team’s overall winning percentage, strength of schedule (see below) and record against “qualified teams” (opponents with a .500 record or better or if they qualify under another criteria- 2nd in league, 70% rule etc.). The formula is already in place to seed most Western and Central Sectional Tournaments.

The system’s Strength of Schedule prong will be determined by weighting the District E schools by specific subcommittee placement. The CMADA Walker Subcommittee has relegated teams into 4 tiers based on several factors. Data was used to generate tournament qualification percentage during the last three tournaments while also specifically highlighting teams who have made the semifinals. Then teams were grouped and compared against one another. This resulted in 4 true tiers based on strength; this will enhance the ability of the Central Sectional Tournament directors to provide an accurate measure of strength of schedule. This improvement will allow Central Sectional Tournament directors to measure true strength, rather than just the size of one’s schedule, and will allow for more accurate calculations for seeding purposes. This proposal was unanimously approved at the January CMADA meeting by District E athletic directors. Appeals of tier placement were allowed and acted on through a case by case basis. Tiers will be re-evaluated every two years by the CMADA Walker System Subcommittee (2018, 2020, 2022).

Tier I: 5 Points Tier II: 4 Points Tier III: 3 Points Tier IV: 2 Points

An opponent from out of state will have the same value as the District E team it faces, and in-state opponents from outside District E will be weighed according to their MIAA divisional tournament alignment. (page 1)

Walker System Instructions

1. Within the “Revised Walker System Team Detail” file, enter a team’s opponents and then results in the corresponding columns as previously done with the old system. Instead of placing opponents in columns based on divisional tournament alignment, teams should be placed in the appropriate tiers.

a. It is recommended that a new sheet is created for each team. This will allow all the data to be saved for future reference. However, information can be entered on the Master Sheet and then printed before entering the next team’s information without the need to create new sheets.

2. After a team’s schedule and results are accurately entered, the file calculates the winning percentage, strength of schedule, and record vs. qualified teams. This information will be required when completing the summary page.

3. After creating individual sheets for each team, or printing each team’s sheet open the “Walker System Summary Sheet” this document should be able to seed a maximum of 24 qualifying teams.

4. Enter all the qualified teams for a particular division within the summary sheet. This includes school name, wins, losses, ties (when appropriate), winning percentage, strength of schedule, and record vs. qualified teams. All of this information can be found on the “Revised Walker System Team Detail” file once completed.

5. The summary sheet is programmed for 24 teams. It is important to have the same number of rows as the number of teams in a particular tournament. Extra rows must be deleted or will cause miscalculations.

6. After you enter all the qualified teams information (including adding or deleting rows) the file should provide a Walker Rating in column R. As you enter team data (winning percentage, strength of schedule, and record vs. qualified teams) the Walker Ratings will begin to compute.

7. Once all the data is entered and you have a Walker Rating for each school you can then assign the tournament seed for each team based on the Walker Rating. The higher the rating the better the seed. As a reference, a 100 Walker Rating means that team is PERFECTLY average compared to the other teams in the tournament. As a team goes above 100, they are that much better than the norm in that tournament. As a team goes below 100, they are that much below the norm in that tournament.

“It’s All Over!”

Well here you are a high school senior. Where did all the time go?

As a student in Sports in Society, you probably have a great deal of memories from youth sports.

Write them down.

My last youth coaching game was a playoff loss to East Bridgewater. We were down 18 – 2 and lost 55 – 35. A tough way to end a season, but…

No player on my team ever got a technical foul.

The players displayed good sportsmanship throughout their careers.

Team Rivalries

Soccer Class of 2020

During Sophomore year in soccer on senior night we played Rockland and this is when the rivalry began between this kid Vitor. It was a tight game the whole way through and we dominated a lot of possession. Everytime this kid got touched he would go down and they would get the call and one time I had enough of it and I went in hard with my shoulder and won the ball and then he slid tackled me from behind. I then got in his face and we were chirping the whole game. They ended up winning the game from a lucky penalty and he had the bragging rights. We didn’t shake hands at the end of the game either. The next year he called us out on instagram and we started going at it online. I wanted to win this game more than anything and we did. Only problem was that he put in a dirty tackle against me and injured my back again. I played the rest of the game and got the game winning assist and had the last laugh. We then easily won the game against them later in the season. Now my senior year we still went at it in the preseason scrimmage. I let my actions do the talking. I was a pest on him the whole game, putting in challenges, dribbling the ball by him and playing rough around him. We won 4-1 and I told him,”you can’t compete with me”. He was injured on the sideline and looked sad at me because he knew I won the battle but I didn’t care. This rivalry lasted for a good two or three years and I loved every second of it. It made me want to hustle for every ball and play a smart game with skill. This is how I took over games throughout the season.
