It is that time of year! March Madness. You assignment for the next few weeks is to

  • Be a player in MIAA Tournament Games
  • Be a superfan at MIAA Tournament Games
  • Listen to tournament games on WATD.
  • Follow teams in the newspaper and on social media.
  • Watch a game on Hanover Community TV

The BIG Decision /MIAA tournament: There is a boys basketball & boys hockey game at the exact same time. Which team will you support? (Marshfield 2018 Basketball @ home vs. Quincy / Marshfield vs. Duxbury hockey)

The Coaches Dilemma: A group of players on a high school team have been arrested for drinking. This is an MIAA violation and carries consequences (See the MIAA Bluebook). The parents hire a lawyer to challenge the decision. At 3:00 PM on game day, the judges orders an injunction that allows the players to play. As a coach, you know the players violated the rules, it is a state tournament game, what do you do? (Local High school many, many years ago) Explain the reasoning behind your decision. Also you will have to answer to your critics REGARDLESS of you choice. How will you respond to

Letting them play: There was an obvious violation of the the MIAA rules, even if the judge sided with the players. What message are you sending to the players? Are you willing to win at all costs, regardless of the actions of your players.

Not allowing them to play.

Pre-viewing Writing Activity:

It is always important to have dreams. With any dream, it can change over time. Often a young athlete dreams of being a professional and maybe even an ELITE household name, the next “Lebron” or “Tom Brady.” With age, time, experience, and FEEDBACK (from parents, coaches, teammates), we revise our dreams. We set more realistic goals and often abandon our wildest dreams.

Family games: The scene shows Arthur playing against his older brother, Curtis, and William playing against his Dad. Describe your experiences with playing sports? What sports did you play? At what age? How competitive were the games? Any fights?

Watergate, and overwhelming image of how powerless we have become. No one could know how important one game could be.

President Carter: “American began to wonder weather we lost our edge.” Walter Mondale Vice President

Goal: Avoid being embarrassed at home.

“It was a pressure packed situation.”

Herb Brooks “abrasive, intense. He also was the best college coach in the country. As a University of Minnesota Herb Brooks was cut just one day. “It looks like they cut the right guy!”

Selecting the University of Minnesota teams.

Regional tensions ran high. I had an enemy and my enemy was the University of Minnesota.

“We thought “These guys are a bunch of hicks from the cow pastures.”

To build a “we” and an “us.” His main team building exercise. “To bond them as a team, They needed one common enemy – him (Brooks)”

Name                                                                                                 period

Miracle: Psychology and Motivation (Final 2013)

As part of your final, you will use the following writing prompts to answer during a class period. Read through all the questions before answering! You DO NOT have to answer all the questions. Select the questions that you connect with the most. Answer the question completely, then choose another question. The expectation is that you will write for the entire period.

  1. “It’s a lofty goal (beating the best team in the world), that’s why I cant to pursue it.” (The Naysayers)

In the interview process, Herb Brooks expresses changing the entire philosophy of the US Olympic program in order to beat the Russians. Many on the committee respond with disbelief at this “lofty goal.”

In life there are always people who doubt our abilities and question are goals. Describe a time when you pursued a goal that was questioned by others and you achieved it.

    1. Describe the goal  – what was it – why did you want to accomplish it
    2. Who questioned your goal – How did they question it
    3. Describe what sacrifices you made to achieve your goal
    4. What did it feel like once you accomplished it? How did the doubter react to your accomplishment?
  1. “There seem to me some people that will never get along…. Like hockey players from Minnesota and Boston.” Hatred of others is sadly a huge part of the human existence. There are wars, racism, sexism, homophobia, and ageism. Describe your thoughts on the reasons of hatred. Why do people hate? Have you ever been the giver or receiver of hate? Explain the situation and your role.
  1. Herb has a reason for everything he does.” The motivation behind others actions is often hard to fugure out.
  1. “Herb, you didn’t ask!” Relationships between friend, families, and others are very complex. Often when people make a decisions, it impacts others either directly or indirectly. In the case of Herb and his wife, Herb had always wanted to coach the Olympic team ever since he was the final cut on the 1960 team.
  1. “I am not looking for the best players, I’m looking for the right ones.” “Walter, each one of those players was chosen for a specific reason. I know those players.” Chemistry among teams and organizations is so critical to success. Describe the “chemistry” of a team or organization which your were a part. Explain how that chemistry affected the organization. This could be either positive or negative. (Conehead line – apparent early in the process that they worked well together.)
    1. Describe the organization / team / social group.
    2. Explain the chemistry and the factors that lead to good or bad chemistry among the group.
    3. Explain what it was like being part of the group.
  1. “Why did you want to play college Hockey? I wanted to win a national championship.” OC settles an “old score” in practice. People hold grudges against others to previous “perceived harms” done. Describe the person, the grudge, and how it was handled.
  1. Win, lose, or tie, you are gonna play like champions.” So much in life involves giving your best effort regardless of the outcome. Herb Brooks was not satisfied with the effort of the team at the exhibition game with Norway. As a result, he conditioned the players with the memorable “again” scene. Describe a time when you either gave an effort you were satisfied with or were disappointed with.
    1. Explain the event and describe your effort
    2. Describe your feelings about your effort after the event.
  1. “This cannot be a team of common men, because common men go nowhere. You must be uncommon.” “Mike Eruzione, Winthrop, Mass. – I play for the United States of America.” Describe a person who is an “uncommon man / woman.” Who was the person, what was accomplished, what made the person “uncommon.”
  1. “You will work hard enough – the legs feed the wolf.” With great accomplishments comes hours and hours, weeks and weeks, months and months, and sometimes years and years of hard work and preparation. Not all people are willing to make the effort necessary to succeed. Some people do not have the will or perseverance. Perhaps you do. Explain a cause, hobby, activity, sport that you have committed countless hours to and the results that occurred.
  1. The new person in town – In the middle of the selection process, the coach introduces a new player. Being new to a group stirs many emotions. If you have been new to a town, school, group, or team. Explain that situation. What was it like? How did people treat you? What were some of the kind acts people committed to make you feel welcome? Were there any “not so kind” acts by individuals? Share if you feel comfortable.
  1. The Cut –There are times in our life when we are told we are not good enough to take a class, get into school, participate in a play, or be on a team.
    1. Describe a time when this occurred in your life.
    2. Describe your preparation and performance for the selection process.
    3. Describe HOW the decision was conveyed to you.
  1. The Motivational Speech – Often in athletics coaches attempt to motivate players through discussions and pre-game speeches. Outside of athletics we are also motivated by the words of others, friends, parents, co-workers, etc. Describe a time you were extremely motivated by the words of another. Include:
    1. The setting – where were you
