February 15, 2017 How old were you? (Future students Use negative numbers if necessary.) What do you remember about this historic game.

Focus on the task at hand: The next play and the one after that.

Situational Football Preparation: Joe Judge We talked to this specific situation. “You know what you have to do. “I felt like we had control of the game, I didn’t feel like we had control of the score.” Really 28 – 3 and you felt like you had control of the game. We all know what happened next

Madden sponsor

Patriots Culture: Bill Belichick as our head coach. He has done it with the great team of people. Toast It is an awesome staff, awesome family. “To Super Bowl 51 Champions. Congratulations.

Ring Ceremony: June 9th: To honor one greatest teams in New History. Enjoy your celebration you have earn tonight’s reward. For the rest of your life you will be known as a Super Bowl Champion. It was “earned.” Look at Brady’s Ring (Tom vs. Time Episode #)

EARNED: The countless hours of film study, preaching technique, and of course the hills. Super Sunday may have had a different ending.

It is also how they beat the Texans and Steelers.

Dedication to Details: The Patriots “dedication to detail. Chad O’Shea is the Red area. He is re Sub inside the 1o. Texans, Steelers Chad O’Shea

GAME PLANNING (Chad O’Shea): When we look at game planning, one of the things we are very particular about is match-ups. We spend a lot time researching, discussing. We formulate our game plan based on match-ups. Obviously the guy who has a shot to be really impactful would be Dion. The question is could we get it to play out. That was the space we were looking for.

Basketball 1 on 1: Just like playing basketball 1 on 1. tremendous match-up. “Running backs of New England vs line backers of Texas. (How do they do it.) Those are the rewarding things of coaching when you put players in a position where they can be successful when you are thorough in your game planning. (Super Bowl XLII Eagles put a “cover guy” on running back. Not a linebacker)

Gadget Plays & Flashback: Steelers Flea flicker. Coach Belichick always wants us to practice these gadget players throughout the season. Philosophy You never know when you are going to need it. That is a play we worked on several times in practice, but we had exposure to Hogan being open on the play. Obviously that was a play that “A little different formation this time.”

2004 Championship game: Same concepts in the 2004 Championship game in Pittsburgh: Dion Branch ran and Givens. Hi Low motion. So that type of play conceptually against the Pittsburg style of defense new coordinators, new head coaches.  Julian was critical a part of this play to insure the play was able. “The key guy on that was Edelman. Which of courts, it doesn’t show up in the stat sheet. That was a big play”

Picture Day. Belichick reminded his players. “This didn’t happen overnight. It took 111 grueling practices. It is very meaningful to them. just to get thjrough one day here. You don’t want your season to end in the 80s (number of practices). If you are in the 80s you are a good month behind the last two teams. We are on the footsteps of a great opportunity. We put in  a lot. We want to leave it out there.

Ernie Adams: It is the last play and ball go deep. “And Ernie is just out!”  “It was unexpected.””I took a few stitches.” He is just marching. Ernie is out with his head wrapped up like a fortune teller. Let’s go.

TOUGHNESS & VERSATILITY: Nick Caserio Director of Player Personnel (Mark Azevedo last person to see Coach Steve Belichick alive at Navy Football game) Versatility: He spends a lot of time digesting our information. Game plan, preparations, practices Offensively, defensively, the game plan, the opponent. His background is in coaching and scouting. He has a very good understanding.  On game days he identifies personnel, substitution, and coverage. I am looking at what the other team is doing. Maybe the game plan has shifted. We have to be able to react, so he can make a good decision. It is a great thing to have someone in the both. He is really valuable for us. He has a very unique skill set. It is really valuable for us.

Ernie Adams (Globe Article): “Adams helps Belichick to decide hen to challenge a play or go for two. And when to go for a 2-point conversion. He has a keen eye on an opponent. He is looking for a “tell,” hoping he will give away. If you keep your eyes open. Is the wind bothering them.

Julio Jones: During Super Bowl pregame warm-ups. Most of his routes when from our right to left. He would plant on his left foot and explode to the right. He didn’t run routes to the right. He didn’t have the same type of explosiveness. He might be favoring the foot or the ankle a little bit. We tried to overplay to our left. December 4th would have been last time he caught a pass last time he caught an out route. The foot looked fine, obviously there was no, so we had to make an adjustment.

Tom Brady: Prior to the game “We have been to 6 Super Bowls together and we have never scored a point in the 1st quarter….. Can we get that done?” We were planning on playing ahead. It just didn’t work out that way. The ball is lose and the Falcons got it. have Fumble.

Pick 6: “Interception. You feel utterly helpless.” “Trouble Now” Bill calmly says “Trouble Now. There was no extreme panic. Fortunately, they have been conquering hills all season. “Put it in the Bank!”

An up hill battle: 18-point deficit. Fortunatley, they understand the meaning behind it. It is meant to push teams in difficult situtiation. You are building your mental toughness and physical toughness. Our conditioning will factor in at some point. Don’t do anything you can’t do. Just play each play itself. Play longer and harder.

47 Plays: We have an opportunity if we capitalize on making it competitive. It was our high for the year. Eventually at some point fatigue will set in. Don’t try .Play each play by itself. We we confident we could still make plays we need to make to win. Overcoming a 25 point deficit that was going to require perfection.

28 – 3: (In the Ring) Devon McCourty “Look there is no room for error now.” 99.6% (in game statistics) that none of us would be here tonight.  chance that none of us would be hear tonight.

Let’s score once! The Patriots were just trying to find there way to the end zone. Let’s try to score one time. Let’s score once! It is basically one cover and they mix in a little bit of 5. They did a good job defending the middle of the field left a free player in the middle. Every throw is contested or batted away.

In Game Adjustments: They did a good job covering the middle. When Tom threw to the perimeter. In the 4th quarter we moved the ball with comeback routes. There was a lot of space out there. helped get the offense on track.

James White being the games unlikely hero. It seems like those 3 guys (Lingo the Y and the X) makes some catch and run plays.

They are not a big Blitz teams. He came up huge. Most of the time you are going to get the half back into the pattern and make some “catch and run plays.” James was the beneficiary. Tom has enough faith and confidence to give him the ball in those situations and he came up huge. (18 – 9)

28-12: “Still looking up hill. Brian Flores “We really need a play.” “No mistakes! No my bads. It gotta be perfect.” Hightower. ‘We got a ball game now. What a play by Hightower.” Okay. Now we can do it.

Exploiting an on-field match-up. New England attacked the Falcons weakness. Freeman Blitz pick up was an area we noticed he had some trouble with. The big weakness “bull rush.” This guy has some major issues with that. (Player Personnel) “Hey this is “scoop and score. You got this.”  Good alignment High is gone UNTOUCHED! “He didn’t see me because I was outside. “We were just a fraction of a second away from a bad play.”

Fundamentals: pad level, tackling focus on the ball. #1 Attack the ball! Attack the ball! Come with the tomahawk. If you can really maintain that stuff all year, that is what you revert to.  We spend a lot of time on fundamentals –

Coaching Clinic: “Attack the ball! Attack the ball! Attack the ball.” Tomahawk / Chop move”

Extra 2 point & Go for 2: We can realistically thing we will have more possessions, that dictates you are going to go for 2. plays handy 2 weeks before the Super Bowl. He strongly recommended that we have several other plays. We have two 2-point plays on the call sheet. Bill brought up the concept about maybe carry and extra 1-2. We spent a lot of time. We were very thorough because our previous season ended with an unsuccessful 2-point play. Denver Loss 20 – 18: I thought it was unbelievable vision.

Points Scored: Try to go up 8 – 0 instead of 7 – 0. Well of course we didn’t score until the 2nd half so that really wasn’t an option we did not have. Wouldn’t you know, the Patriots had multiple 2-point plays to choose from.

28 – 18: McDaniels called a play that always served the Patriots well. It is a one score game. (Kevin Faulk) Super Bowl 38 agains Carolina. This had to work. Direct snap to James White. 20-8. Super Bowl 38 vs. Carolina. The center has to snap the ball and hope there is enough distraction. 28 – 20 5:26 “Now we have a ball game folks.

The Last 5 Minutes of the game & Jones Catch: Flash back to Tyrie Catch. What a catch! There is always in the last 5 minutes. It was good defense. The Jones catch put the Falcons in field goal range. The lead was 8 points. If the Falcons scored the game was over.

Pressure Call: We call the run defense. He made a great tackle out in space. 2 More players “OK they’re going to run it again. They are just gonna run the clock now.””They are just gonna run and it and kick it”. When you are looking at the situation, you have the quarterback of the year, one of the greatest wide receivers in the league. I make a pass call it was a pressure call. “You can’t take a sack. That is a costly sack.” The Patriots call TIMEOUT 3:50

Game Changing Penalty: Hightower coming from the right edge. Tackle HighTower. The non-call on the previous play reminded him of an earlier player. Same crew (Carl Cheffers) Watch that ref.”They do that again they are going call it.” Called holding on a 2-point play that ended the game.

3 & 23 / Scouting Reports (Refs too): Jake Matthews. He is just light on the edge. Guys power through his outside shoulder (specific technique for a specifics player) “Let’s go, Let’s go get it!” After analyzing the situation, the players and even the officiating crew. He unleashed Chris Long on Matt Ryan. “Field Goal” Atlanta Coach There is a a penalty marker in the backfield. Similar to Huge, huge play in the game.

They are giving the ball back and giving Brady a chance

28-20

Brady look:

The greatest catch in Super Bowl History / Edelman Catch: “I caught it.” When he got up. I knew he caught it. A casual conversation between competitors. “That is incredible.” That was SKILL. He is focused. 70% Luck (Analysis of punt return  AFC Ch)

Three plays in 8 – 9 minutes that just were unbelievable.

  1. Catch
  2. Hightower Strip Sack
  3. Trey Flowers sack

CONDITIONING – “PUT YOUR WORK IN THE BANK!” With the high volume of plays: I felt like that was a big factor. Put your work in the bank and when it comes up in a competitive situation it will be there when you need it.

“TWO for the TIE” 28-26 2 point conversion: With a chance to tie, it was time to order off the 2-point menu for the 2nd time in the game. When you have a 2-point play, you are obviously in a critical point in the game. Have our best players touch the ball. We choose Danny because we feel he is the the best “TRASH RUNNER” That is why we choose Danny. Turn your head and shoulders. Dive through a brick wall. It wasn’t going to be easy. The biggest 2-point attempt in the Patriot’s franchise history.

I cannot believe what I am witnessing. “Nice Job Dola!” (4 Days in October)

Coin Toss: NO DOUBT OVERTIME (1st time in Super Bowl History): “HEADS” “Game over!” They scored the last 4 times they touched the ball. “You had to feel it on the sideline. You had to feel their mindset. It was no doubt in their minds. Not one of them.” “You weren’t going to overcome that deficit in that amount of time not score.”

3rd and FINAL two point play : It was the perfect time to call the 3rd 2-point play. It was unbelievable vision. We were successful on 2 2-point play. The final play was that was the additional play we had on our call sheet. We felt like it would give us a shot. He wasn’t available so we left James White in there, but he didn’t run it in practice 2 yards from a 5th Super Bowl Championship. 2 & Goal: 3rd two point plays. A touchdown and title for the Patriots.

Official Review: The additional play he asked us to have in the game. I’m still standing there. They gotta review this.

2 yards from a 5th Super Bowl Championship! A Touchdown and Title for the Patriots: The confetti. “There is no way they are not going to review this. They gotta review this.” The officials on our sideline stay out there. They were waiting to here. There was a lot of celebrating going on, to our players credit. Many of them were ready to play. They were alert to it.” Is he in?

It’s good! It’s over. They review it: It he in. It was great to let everyone know.

And That’s It: For They counted us out. A lot has transpired over the last two years. Super Bowl Champions – open your rings now.

I want to point out what you have done. All of us love each other. Collectively this team accomplished a lot. This was a special team.

S1:E2 The Mental Game

For Tom Brady, football is as much a mental game as it is a physical one. This episode puts us inside Tom’s head, revealing just how cerebral football really is for him. Despite all of Tom’s preparation, the Patriots narrowly lose their fourth game, bringing their record to 2-2. But Tom also has a young family at home that wants his attention win or lose. He has no time to wallow in failure both for his family’s sake – and because there is another game just a week away.

Tom vs. Time was a great documentary that looked at the season. It was another example of an athlete taking ownership of his / her story. The Players Tribune is one site that has many athletes publish articles and videos. We will use this resource quite a bit this year and it should be part of your sports feed / stream.

There are two ways that this documentary can be presented:

  1. As the season progresses. This will allow for the students to see how the season moves along and the different stages of the NFL season. (Cons it can be a little challenging to remember the previous episode. Pros avoid the “Can we watch the next Tom vs. Time Episode?”
  2. Grouped by Episodes: It might be useful to group the segments together and watch a few at a time. I have not done this yet.
  3. Start to Finish: This might be the best approach. With each segment, students will answer writing prompts and have class discussion.

Below is the tentative schedule for the class based on the part of the season.

The Physical Game Episode #1 (15:44): September before opening day The Physical Game (Published Wednesday January 24, 2018): Coming off the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is already looking ahead to next season. This premiere episode offers an intimate look inside Tom’s unique, well honed training process – and his drive for perfection – heading into the 2017 NFL season. (Super Bowl  – October 6, 2017)

Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018 (Last night in New England)

The Mental Game Episode #2 (15:06): Week #4: The Mental Game

For Tom Brady, football is as much a mental game as it is a physical one. This episode puts us inside Tom’s head, revealing just how cerebral football really is for him. Despite all of Tom’s preparation, the Patriots narrowly lose their fourth game, bringing their record to 2-2. But Tom also has a young family at home that wants his attention win or lose. He has no time to wallow in failure both for his family’s sake – and because there is another game just a week away.

The Social Game Episode #3 (15:00): Week 5 – 6 (Original Air Date Tuesday, Jan. 30)

Tom Brady may be the greatest football player of all time, but football is a team sport. As Tom puts it, he’s nothing without the guys around him. So, Tom takes some of his closest teammates to Yellowstone for a brotherhood bonding experience aka “Gladiator Camp.” But even on vacation, the training never stops.

The Emotional Episode #4 (16:05): Week #12 (Last Saturday in November) Thursday, Feb. 1 Sunday, February 4th / Super Bowl Sunday

Two things matter more than anything to Tom Brady: football and family. Chapter IV explores the push-pull between Tom’s supreme dedication to his sport, and his deep devotion for his children. Tom takes his eldest son on a whirlwind tour of China during the off-season, even while he struggles to find a healthy balance during the all-consuming football season.

The Spiritual Game: Episode #5 (21:44)

How soon after the end of the game.

For New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, football is more than a game – it’s a spiritual vocation. Football is what gives his life purpose. But the clock is ticking, Tom’s children are growing up fast, and his wife, supermodel Gisele Bundchen, is losing patience with Tom’s all-consuming devotion to his sport. Time is all we have – and Tom is painfully aware of it. How much longer can he keep playing the sport he loves?

End Game Episode #6 (14:42):  TBA

Epilogue: After 18 years in the NFL, Tom Brady has done it all. Now, after an off-season spent in search of his conviction, Tom looks ahead to his 19th season season at age 41. Win or lose, Tom’s mind is always on the next game.

Mental toughness means a lot. I am trying to get that out of my teammates. Letting everyone else know it is time to go out there an perform.

“Being mentally tough is putting all the BS aside All that noise and focusing on what you gotta do. It’s no excuses. It’s no whining. It’s no complaining. It is like look, did you win or did you lose. End of story!
