Ray Mancini vs Duk Koo Kim, 1982 WBA Lightweight Title

Duk Koo Kim was a South Korean professional boxer who died after a championship fight against Ray Mancini in November 1982. Kim was knocked out in the 14th round and suffered a fatal brain injury, which led to a coma and his death five days later. His death prompted major safety reforms in professional boxing, including a reduction of championship bouts from 15 to 12 rounds.

    • The fight:

On November 13, 1982, Kim challenged Ray Mancini for the WBA lightweight championship in Las Vegas.

  • The knockout:

After a brutal fight, Kim was knocked down in the 14th round and did not recover, leading to the match being stopped.

  • The tragedy:

Kim fell into a coma and, after surgery, was declared brain-dead. He passed away on November 18, 1982, just five days after the fight, at the age of 23.

  • The aftermath:

Kim’s death led to significant changes in boxing to improve fighter safety, such as shortening championship fights to 12 rounds and mandating more thorough pre-fight medical exams.

  • Legacy:
The tragic event has been the subject of films, including the 2002 South Korean movie Champion, and continues to be a pivotal moment in boxing history, as detailed on Wikipedia, Find a Grave, and by this ESPN article
